GALIS EUROLEAGUE LEGEND

The 1993-94 season, was the first time EUROPE heard about Panathinaikos Basketball Club since 1981, when Takis Koronaios, Liveris Andritsos and David Stergakos led the team to the Euroleague's (then called champions cup) final stage, eliminating the mighty team of CSKA Moscow.

Actually, it was the 1992-93 season when the powerfull team we all know today, started its creation. And Nick Galis, even being 35, would be the ideal choise for PAO's and the fan's european dream. Along side with Galis, Croatian Legend Stojan Vrankovic and young and Talented Nikos Economou, and the GREAT CAPTAIN, FRAGHISKOS ALVERTIS.

In 1993-94 season, PANATHINAIKOS reached the final four of the euroleague, in Tel Aviv, for the very first time. It was the begining of the golden era of the team. Galis, being 36, was not what he used to be, he could not jump as he did, not dribble as he did, and the fact that he was not as fast as in the past was also very obvious. All those did not prevent Galis to give some memorable spectacles, his last ones in the game. In those two seasons that Galis played for Panathinaikos, was more like a combo-point guard, passing like crazy, while his shooting, improved more than ever. In his best ever performance as a "Green", Galis scored 36 points, shooting 13/13 fg, 10/10 ft and dishing 19 fiba assists (!!!). (against Aris Thessaloniki, his ex-team).

About the game you're watching:

CSP Limoges-Panathinaikos 75-68. Panathinaikos losing to CSP Limoges (Michael Young, Richard Dacoury, Jim Bilba, Frederic Forte and coach Bozidar Maljkovic) in 1993-94 euroleague's quarter finals (GAME 1).

37 year old Galis scoring 24 points against the french (he averaged 23.9 points in the euroleague that year) and dished 3 assists (he averaged almost 5 that season).

22 year old Alvertis scoring 17 points showing some skills, shooting 4/4 for two points, 2/5 for three and 3/4 ft.

Galis and Alvertis were room mates during that era, Galis taught a lot young Frankie, about leadership and professionalism in basketball.

Galis, Alvertis, Vrankovic and Volkov led Panathinaikos safely to the 3rd place in europe that time. It was the best ranking the team ever had in its history, and a great start for a whole new era, that led up to nowdays huge success.

That great success was overshadowed by the fact that the greens lost to Olympiacos Piraeus, the archirivals, in the semis, while nobody ever thought that the reds where a far more experienced team and that by the time, they were considered to be one of the most dominant teams Europe ever saw (even though they lost to DKV Joventut's wonderful basketball tactics, due to the masterful coaching of Zeljko Obradovic).

Panathinaikos wins at least one title for consecutive 18 years!!

ZELJKO MAN OF DECISION

In a night of high emotions at the Olympic Sports Hall of Athens, Panathinaikos welcomed back its coach for 13 years, Zeljko Obradovic, honored him and then beat his team, Fenerbahce Ulker by nine points to edge closer to a spot in the last eight of the Euroleague.
The Greens won 76-67 on the night to cover the deficit of their five-point loss in Istanbul a few weeks ago, but the result pales in comparison to the amazing reception Panathinaikos and its fans reserved for the Serb coach who led the team to five Euroleague triumphs from 1999 to 2012.
Over 20,000 Panathinaikos supporters gave Obradovic a standing ovation when he stepped onto the court and chanted his name continuously for about five minutes. A massive green banner ran along the height of the stands reading “The King is Back”, in English.
